What I Wish My Clients Knew
As a doula, I feel deeply honored to witness the incredible journeys of birth. If you’re preparing for childbirth or supporting someone who is, here are some things I wish everyone knew. I hope these insights provide comfort, clarity, and support as you navigate this sacred experience.
1. Birth Is Not Always Picture-Perfect
It's easy to be swayed by the highlight reels of birth we see online—videos of quick labors, peaceful deliveries, and perfect postpartum moments. While birth can be magical, it’s rarely as flawless as it appears on social media. Birth can be unpredictable, messy, and intense, and sometimes it doesn’t go according to plan. Yet, even in the chaos, there is beauty. Your birth story is valid, whether it unfolds exactly how you envisioned or takes a different turn. Remember: all birth stories matter.
2. Birth Is Messy and Magical
The magic of birth isn’t about perfection; it’s about the raw, powerful experience of bringing new life into the world. It’s important to honor all parts of the journey—the moments of joy, the challenges, and everything in between. Your experience might feel complex, and that’s perfectly normal. Embrace the journey, knowing it can be transformative and deeply meaningful, even in its hardest moments.
3. Not Everyone Who Gives Birth Is a Woman
This may be surprising to some, but not everyone who gives birth identifies as a woman. Trans men, non-binary people, and others within the LGBTQ+ community also experience pregnancy and birth. As a doula, I affirm and support all birthing people, no matter their gender identity. Everyone deserves to feel respected and validated in their experience of bringing life into the world.
4. Not Everyone Can or Wants to Get Pregnant
In our conversations about pregnancy and birth, we must also acknowledge that not everyone can or wants to experience these things. Infertility, medical conditions, and personal choices shape many people’s journeys. If this is part of your story, your experience is equally valid, and your feelings deserve to be honored.
5. Vulnerability Is a Part of the Process
Pregnancy and birth are vulnerable experiences. It’s normal to feel unsure, afraid, or even overwhelmed at times. You may question your plans or change your mind about what you want. That’s okay. Birth is as much about listening to your body and heart as it is about trusting your support system. As your doula, I’m here for you—no matter what. I’m committed to creating a safe, supportive space where you can be yourself and feel cared for, every step of the way.
6. It’s Okay to Ask for Help
You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Lean on your support system, ask questions, and trust that seeking guidance is a sign of strength. Doulas, midwives, doctors, and loved ones are here to support you. Your well-being matters, and you deserve to feel empowered and informed in every decision you make.
Birth is powerful, unpredictable, and life-changing. My hope is that you approach this journey with an open heart, knowing that all experiences are valid and worthy of respect.
With love and support,
